They had so much fun they didn’t want to wave goodbye. As the seaplane climbed steadily up, away from the water, its passengers had a bird’s-eye view of the sheltered waters, forested islands and sandy beaches of British Columbia’s Gulf Islands they had explored at length over the past week.
There was the rounded top of Mount Galiano. A guided hike to its peak on a clear afternoon had provided panoramic views of BC’s Coast Mountains and Vancouver Island—even as far as Mount Baker and the Olympic Peninsula. Far below was the cove where they’d stayed at a private waterfront “family-style” cabin.
At Exposure Travel, we understand that in planning luxury family vacations, it can be tricky to satisfy everyone. Kids of different ages have different abilities and varying interests. Exposure Travel specializes in organizing family adventure travel that accommodates everyone’s interests.
When one particular family wanted a unique Spring Break adventure that would be healthy, active and educational for their children, here are some of the many activities we planned over the week to keep everyone happy and engaged.
The family spent time aboard a tall-ship wooden cruiser, exploring secluded bays, remote beaches and tiny seaside villages.
Through hands-on learning (the very best kind), the captain showed the kids how to raise the ship’s huge sails, read marine charts and steer through the channels. More active learning happened on daily Zodiac excursions with a naturalist to view wildlife such as sea lions, porpoises and seabirds in their natural habitat.
Zipping from island to island in private boats, the kids learned to fish for salmon, prawns and Dungeness crab. In the evening, they learned from a private chef how to prepare their catch.
The fun (and education in natural history) was not limited to the water. Guided mountain biking along coastal trails and through rainforest gave the family an appreciation for the unique environment of BC’s Gulf Islands, with its Douglas fir, Garry oak and distinctive red-barked Arbutus trees.
We know the kids had the time of their lives on this ultimate family adventure. The parents, too, could relax and enjoy themselves, knowing their children were at all times safe, active, entertained—even enjoying a custom menu designed just for them. Root beer floats and gourmet burgers, anyone?
